Hot people vote
the opportunity
For our final design studio project, we created a community intervention focused on civic engagement and voting. A survey of 30+ Miami University students revealed two key insights: 30% felt their vote didn’t matter, and 70% felt uninformed about voting. These findings highlighted a need for accessible resources to encourage informed participation. Our goal was to activate young voters through an inclusive, approachable, and non-biased campaign.
the process
We developed a college-friendly guide to voting, paired with a visually appealing brochure that avoided intimidating “overly patriotic” tones. Messaging focused on making a voting plan and included non-biased, easy-to-follow resources. At our community event, we shared these materials, invited a Civic Engagement Fellow to answer questions, and facilitated button-making to spark conversations. The event created a welcoming space for dialogue and connection.
The results
Our project engaged students by providing approachable, informative resources and creating an interactive event. The materials helped demystify the voting process and encouraged civic participation. Conversations during the event bridged gaps in voter knowledge and fostered confidence. Reflecting on the experience, we documented our process, outcomes, and ideas for future initiatives. This project showcased the potential of design to drive meaningful social change.
